Once Elvis became a national phenomenon in the first half of 1956 Hollywood naturally moved in for his signature. For the next 14 years Elvis was in and out of Hollywood making what can only be described as Elvis Movies. The formula was simple - Elvis, girls, sunny locations, and enough songs to fill a new RCA album. The storyline mattered very little and the budget for each movie was next to nothing. But the movies raked in the dollars. So, the Hollywood moguls were happy, the Colonel (Elvis' manager) was happy, and to a certain extent the fans were happy. But Elvis was rarely happy. It was a sad use of a great talent.
It's debatable whether Elvis had the talent to be a great actor, but the signs were there in films like Jailhouse Rock, King Creole and Flaming Star - arguably Elvis' three best films. But the dream of becoming another Marlon Brando was never realised.
But such was the power of Elvis' appeal that a good number of his movies are very watchable, some even claiming cult status like Viva Las Vegas with the on-screen chemistry between Elvis and Ann Margart. And Jailhouse Rock is firmly in the hall of fame of classic fifties movies.
Elvis will forever be associated with Hawaii not least because of the 1961 box smash hit Blue Hawaii, which became his biggest grossing movie and selling album at the time. He revisited Hawaii twice more for the films Girls Girls Girls and Paradise Hawaiian Style.
In 1970, after churning out 31 feature films, Elvis made a documentary feature Elvis: That's the Way It Is, and repeated the formula two years later with Elvis On Tour, both depicting Elvis' dynamic live performances that not one artist since has been able to match.
